Leaving the graveyard shift for a day shift job from home
What night work does to your sleep and health, how to move your body clock back to day shift, where remote day jobs are, and what to ask before you quit.
If you work nights for a US account, you know the routine. A 9am start in New York is 9pm in Manila, or 10pm when New York is on winter time. You sleep while your family is awake, and your days off don't feel like rest.
This guide covers the health side first. Then come the two practical steps: moving your sleep back to the night, and finding remote work on Manila daytime hours.
What years of night shift do to your body
Your body runs on a 24-hour clock, and light is what sets it. The US National Institutes of Health says shift work alters the normal sleep-wake cycle. In the short term you feel it as drowsiness and trouble focusing.
The long-term risks are the ones to take seriously:
- The US National Institutes of Health says long-term sleep loss and constantly shifting body clocks can raise the risk of obesity, diabetes, mood disorders, heart and blood pressure problems, and cancer.
- NIOSH, the CDC's workplace health institute, lists the problems shift workers may be at higher risk for: heart disease, stomach and gut disorders, mental health problems, cancer and diabetes.
- In 2019 the WHO's cancer agency, IARC, classed night shift work as "probably carcinogenic to humans". It based that on limited evidence in people. Read it as one more reason to protect your sleep.
NIOSH also names the cost you feel every week: shift work cuts into your time for family and everything outside work. The CDC says adults need 7 or more hours of sleep a night. If you get less even on days off, your body hasn't adjusted to nights. It's just coping.
How to switch from night shift to day shift sleep
You can't flip your clock in one night. NIOSH's advice for people moving to day shift comes down to light: bright light in the morning, dim light in the evening. Over a few days, your body starts waking earlier and getting sleepy earlier.
- Choose the time you'll wake up on day shift, and get up at that time every day, including days off.
- Get outside light soon after you wake. Indoor lights are dim by comparison, and NIOSH says sunlight is the brightest light source available, even on an overcast day. A lamp on a timer that turns on 15 to 30 minutes before your alarm helps on dark mornings.
- Dim the house about two hours before bed. NIOSH suggests dim light only, or dark sunglasses, so light doesn't push your clock later.
- Make the bedroom very dark. Blackout curtains or an eye mask, and no phone or TV light by the bed.
- Take care going home after your last night shift. Dark glasses on the way home can help you sleep, but NIOSH warns they can also make you drowsier, so wear them only if someone else is driving.
Start the week before your first day shift if you can. Your body is easier to move when you aren't also learning a new job.
How to find a remote job on Manila daytime hours
Your hours depend on where your client is. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur run on the same clock as Manila, so a client there works when you work.
DayShift lists remote jobs for clients in Singapore and elsewhere in Asia, so the work runs in your daytime. Each listing shows the pay, per hour or per month, before you apply. See today's roles at /jobs, or start at /remote-jobs.
When you read any job post, look for the hours in writing. "Singapore business hours", "SGT" or "GMT+8" means daytime for you. "US hours", "EST" or "graveyard" means nights again, whatever the title says.
Your BPO years count. Most admin listings ask for some admin, VA or customer service experience, and appointment setting roles ask for phone confidence. Start with /jobs/admin-assistant and /jobs/telemarketing. New to VA work? Read how to become a virtual assistant (/blog/how-to-become-a-virtual-assistant).
Before you resign, get these answers in writing
Don't hand in your notice on a verbal promise. Get these answers in a message or a contract first:
- The hours, with a time zone. "9am to 6pm Singapore time" is an answer. "Flexible" isn't.
- The pay, the currency, and whether it's per hour or per month. If your current pay includes a night differential, compare what actually lands in your account each month.
- Who your contract is with. On DayShift, it's Catalyst Outsourcing, a Singapore company.
- When and how you're paid, and which holidays and rest days you get. These vary from contract to contract, so ask for yours.
- What you need at home, and what the client expects you to do in a brownout.
Then check your current contract for its notice period, so you leave on good terms. And if anyone asks you to pay a fee to get the day job, walk away. Read how to spot legit work from home jobs (/blog/legit-work-from-home-jobs-philippines) before you send your ID to anyone.

Questions
How long does it take to switch from night shift to day shift?
Usually a few days. NIOSH says bright light in the morning and dim light in the evening move your body clock earlier over a few days. Keep the same wake-up time every day while it settles.
Is night shift bad for your health?
It can raise your risks over time. NIOSH says shift workers may be at higher risk for heart disease and diabetes, among other conditions. IARC classes night shift work as probably carcinogenic.
Are there remote day shift jobs in the Philippines?
Yes. Clients in Singapore and Malaysia work on the same clock as Manila, so their working day is yours. DayShift lists those roles, with the pay on every listing.
Should I quit my night shift job before I find a day job?
No. Get the offer in writing first, with the hours and the pay, then resign. Check your current contract's notice period so you leave on good terms.
