How to answer "tell me about yourself" without rambling
A three-part answer to "tell me about yourself" for remote jobs, with example answers for an admin VA, a video editor and a telemarketer.
"Tell me about yourself" is usually the first question in an interview, and it's the one people ramble on. The client doesn't want your life story, just about a minute that tells them you can do this job.
What the client is really asking
Your CV already lists where you've worked. What the client wants from this answer is what a CV can't show: how you sound in English, whether you can keep it short, and whether you understood the job they posted. On a remote job, how you talk on this call is a preview of every call after it.
Answer in three parts so you don't ramble
It follows the usual present, past and future order, with each part aimed at a remote job:
- Now: what you do today, in one or two sentences. If you're between jobs, say what you've been doing.
- Before: one or two things from past work that match this job. Name a task and a result instead of listing companies.
- Why this job: why the role fits you and what you'd do for them. Read the job post again before the call and use its words.
Aim for 45 to 90 seconds. Indeed's guide says to keep the whole story to two minutes or less, so treat two minutes as the hard stop. Say your answer out loud with a timer on your phone, and if you go over, cut the oldest job first.
Example answers you can adapt to your own job
The three answers below are made-up examples, so swap in your own jobs, places and numbers.
Example: admin VA
Right now I'm an admin assistant at a small trading company in Pasig. I run the owner's calendar, answer about 40 emails a day and keep our customer list in Google Sheets. Before that I spent two years in a call center, so I'm used to talking with customers and logging every call. Your post asks for calendar work and CRM updates, which is most of my day already, and I'd like to do it from home on Singapore hours.
Admin roles hiring now are at /jobs/admin-assistant.
Example: video editor
I edit short videos, mostly Reels and TikToks, for two small food businesses in Cebu. I cut about eight videos a week in CapCut and Premiere, with captions and music. Before that I edited sermons for a church YouTube channel, which is where I learned to work fast with long talking-head footage. Your post asks for short-form edits with captions, and that's the work I do every week. I'm looking for a steady part-time client I can grow with.
Video editing roles are at /jobs/video-editor.
Example: telemarketer
For about a year I've called leads for a property developer and booked their site viewings. On a good day I book four or five appointments, and I log every call in the CRM before I dial the next one. Before that I sold insurance face to face, so I'm comfortable with people who say no. You're booking appointments for consultants in Singapore, and I'd like to do that work on day shift hours.
Telemarketing roles are at /jobs/telemarketing. In Malaysia? Use the same three parts; roles open to Malaysian workers are listed at /jobs/malaysia.
What to leave out of your answer
- Your whole work history, year by year. Pick the parts that match this job.
- Personal details the job doesn't need, like your age, religion or marital status.
- Why you left a bad job, unless they ask.
- Skills you couldn't demonstrate on the call, because if you say you're great with Excel, they may ask you to share your screen and show them.
- Anything memorised word for word. Know your three parts and say them in your own words, so you sound like yourself.

Questions
How long should my answer to "tell me about yourself" be?
About 45 to 90 seconds. Indeed's guide says two minutes or less, so stop well before that.
Should I talk about my personal life?
Only briefly, if at all. One line about why you want to work from home is fine, but your age, religion and family details don't belong in the answer.
What if I have no work experience?
Use school, freelance or volunteer work for the "before" part: a task you did and what came of it. Then say why this job fits you.
Can I use the same answer for every interview?
Keep the same three parts, but rewrite the "why this job" part for every post so it uses that job's words.
